Kuan-Hao Chao is a Senior Deep Learning Scientist at the Illumina AI Lab. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Center for Computational Biology, Johns Hopkins University, where he was advised by Steven Salzberg and Mihaela Pertea. He received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University (NTU) and was an exchange student at the College of Engineering & Computer Science, Australian National University (ANU).

His research focuses on computational genomics and sequence-to-function modeling, including splice-site prediction and genome annotation. He developed Splam (Genome Biology, 2024) for accurate splice site prediction and created LiftOn (Genome Research, 2025) for improved cross-species genome annotation. He is an advocate of open-source software. Check out his NEWS and GitHub page.
